AS OFTEN occurs there is currently a national debate about the NHS and its funding, but these problems should never be allowed to outweigh the tremendous and professional services that the NHS and its staff provide and that my wife and I have recently experienced. My wife recently attended her regular breast screening and within a seven-week period she was diagnosed with a small tumour, had tests, an operation, biopsies and results showing that the cancer hadn't spread. The service at Weston Hospital has been magnificent and I wish to publicly thank all its staff and particularly Dr Nick Gallygos, Jenny Leonard and their associates. If you are in the breast-screening programme, make sure you attend regularly. The system works. Direct your criticism of the NHS to the right targets. The politicians and senior management should take the knocks not the nursing staff.MR S THORNE - Totterdown Road, Weston
