It might not be the most exciting thing on your to do list on the run up to the festive season but it could be a disaster if you do not look after the mode of transport which will be ferrying around cards and gifts to friends and family come Christmas Eve.
And it’s no good having the CD player working to keep you entertained during the long drive to mum and dad’s house on December 22, if your windscreen wipers do not work and your exhaust pipe is about to fall off.
So, give your vehicle the TLC it deserves now by booking it in for a winter service to make sure those tyres are legal and safe, the oil is topped-up, the correct level of anti-freeze is in place and everything else is in good working order.
Similarly, it is very easy to overlook that your MOT is due right before Christmas – I know – the worst possible timing right? And with the rest of the Christmas preparations in full swing it’s easily forgotten or put to the bottom of the list but it does not bear thinking about what could happen if you don’t get that all-important sheet of paper telling you your essential mode of transport is fit to drive.

If you are travelling to relatives for the holidays, don’t forget to make sure your car is prepared for the long journey. As well as filling the tank with fuel, ensure your tyres are at the correct pressure, the wipers are working and the washers have fluid in – at least a half and half ratio of water to screen-wash is best. Also, check all your lights work so you can see, and be seen. Make sure your windows, windscreen and mirrors are clean to combat low sun and driving rain which can make visibility poor.
It’s always a good idea to have an emergency kit in the car in case of long traffic delays. This should consist of warm blankets, an ice scraper, de-icer, torch with spare batteries, drinks and snacks. Most importantly, make sure your mobile phone is fully-charged and has details of your breakdown insurance before setting out.
Finally, a little tip for when you get in your vehicle in cold weather and the windows are all misted up.
The quickest way to de-mist them is to set your car’s heater onto cold, put the air conditioning on full and direct the blast to the windscreen.
The temptation is to fill the car with hot air to get everyone warm as quickly as possible but as it contains moisture like in our breath it takes longer to stop the condensation forming again on the windscreen.
The air conditioning or cold air will dry the air out first to prevent condensation and then you can turn the heat up!
