I HAVE every sympathy with Robert Craig's comments in your last issue. Weston's needs are very different from the likes of Portishead, Backwell, Wrington et al Prior to North Somerset Council's institution as a unitary authority in 1996 widespread consultation was supposed to have taken place. I wonder if that was the case.
In a large town in Surrey where I was living at the time there was actually a referendum and the authorities abided by the result. I would have thought that Weston on its own justifies being a tier in local government.
With borough councils now defunct, Weston, with a population approaching 100,000, should be a district council in its own right or even a unitary council come to that.
The majority of councillors represent areas outside of Weston when what the town really needs is a district council with Weston as the only point of focus.
