I SEE that Jacqui Mayo (Opinion January 29) managed to totally twist the content of my letter (January 22). Had she read it properly she would have seen that I actually said the sport of dog showing was enjoyed by thousands.
However, I wholeheartedly agree with her sentiment that many dogs are used as money-making breeding machines. A prime example of this was when the Welsh Assembly gave grants to farmers to diversify into dog breeding. I didn't notice the voice of the RSPCA or other rescue organisations, raised against their disgraceful decision.
Small scale breeders/exhibitors will very often insist that any dog they breed be returned to them at any time during its life if it is no longer wanted.
Most ordinary pet owners should not breed at all, and cross breeds should not be bred from either.
The ridiculous practise of breeding designer cross breeds will always be perpetuated if people keep paying ludicrous sums of money for what is, after all, a mongrel.
