IT WILL, of course, be obvious to readers that Mr Bell and his Lib Dem friends would spend vast amounts of money on changing signs, letter heads and wardrobe on a mayor, if they were still running the council. In fact none of these costs are necessary or even contemplated.Retitling the position of chairman to mayor is a simple procedure, but has the benefit of ensuring that North Somerset is treated more as an equal among other authorities within the region. It may also help the public to better differentiate between the ceremonial and the political leadership of the council, where of course the real power lies.PB - Winscombe
