I THINK Cllr Crockford-Hawley may have been ill advised to import more sand into the Marine Lake, Weston, as part of the new sea defences. As an ex geography teacher, he should realise the sand is already there. Due to the action of the tide it is all piled up against the wall leaving only about a metre of wall visible in some places. If you look at old photographs of the Marine Lake you can clearly see that the sand level is much lower with two flights of steps going down from the old collonade where the swing boats were.Even older photographs of Glentworth Bay show the wall to be about four metres high. Old Westonians will remember the Borough Council regularly moved the sand back to the north end to keep the beach level. Since Knightstone and the Marine Lake were leased out this essential maintenance has not been done. Any more sand would only end up even higher at the south end and will get blown over the road and into the Nook and Harbour.MARTIN COLEVia e-mail
