Re: Instant fines for litterbugs: It is not just tobacco related litter that needs action but all the fast food and drink containers and also sweet wrappers that disfigure the streets. I agree strongly with Ken Smith about the state of Portishead streets. Most of the litter in the area I live is dropped by school pupils on their way to Gordano School. When I was at school we were made to clear any litter dropped in the school grounds and taught that leaving our refuse was wrong. Children are given a very bad example today by the state of the main roads and motorways with vast amounts of rubbish thrown from vehicles by lazy and thoughtless people. Maybe VAT should be increased up to 25 per cent on the type of junk food and drink that make up most of this litter and this money could be used to clear it up on the principle that the polluter pays instead of council tax payers.Anthony Dowling - Newlands Hill, Portishead
