SO THE Weston Mercury thinks that the film Brassed Off catapulted the Grimethorpe Colliery Band to fame. These were the words used for the band's visit to The Playhouse on Sunday. I can remember as a youngster being in awe of this famous brass band along with others such as the Black Dyke Mills Band and Fodens Motorworks Band. A few years later when I played in contests for the Shirley Silver Band from the Midlands, I remember I could only dream of reaching the heights that Grimethorpe and the others had achieved. So come on the Mercury, the Grimethorpe Colliery (UK Coal) Band to give them their correct title have been famous for years and the film was made about them, because of that fact.MIKE FLETCHER - Moor Croft Road, Weston
