THE lack of logic displayed by most of our North Somerset councillors has long ceased to surprise us but now their total abandonment of commercial reality has opened up a fresh channel of dismay. How Cllr Peddlesden can seriously compare the civic amenities subsidies necessary to Weston with any other small town in the district beggars belief. The Mercury has intimated that Weston, by comparison, has a certain fame, reputation and appeal on a national scale and is, therefore, the main reason that tourists travel hundreds of miles to the area - it even ranks with Bristol and Bath in its national familiarity. What needs vital mention, however, is the fact that Weston stands alone in being a victim of the sacrifice of its resort heritage to commercial profiteers and residential developers. The process will continue until Weston is one faceless and pointless building site, unless this council is given serious cause for pause. The council has openly encouraged the free and open construction of, and conversion to, residential property at a ridiculous level hoping that the council tax revenue would bolster the coffers and hence the infrastructure. It can't! Gross miscalculation! Now we are about to face a period of financial belt-tightening the last thing we need are more shopping malls - to ultimately host 'closing down sales'. We need recreational venues in order that there is some enjoyment on offer, for citizens and tourists alike, at a reasonable cost, not more pubs and fast-food restaurants tacked onto shopping extensions. This is our town, North Somerset Council, not your game board. We cannot be held up to blame, or to suffer, for mismanagement and disregard of public desires. We demand that you give it back to us, complete with some reasonable roads to travel around it.Play Monopoly during your own time - when it won't involve us with increased expense accounts and pension payments for you.P HUNTER - Trewartha Park, Weston
