ON READING your article in the local paper, I was a bit amazed by the paragraph re the cost to the council of about 5 per pothole to repair.

I was wondering where you got this figure from. My husband who used to work for the Highways for a long time said the figure you quote would only cover the cost of the material. There is no way one pothole could be done for 5. You have the council van and the men to pay on top of the material cost, so this figure is a bit misleading to say the least.

That is all North Somerset Council do these days is fill in potholes. They do no road maintenance and when a road needs extensive work carried out, they close the roads without thought of the chaos they cause.

When the old Avon County Council was in charge, road maintenance was carried out on a regular basis and no roads were shut as a result, but new health and safety rules I suppose have changed that.

I hope this clarifies the matter.
