I AM writing an open letter to North Somerset Council hoping I will raise enough queries that someone will give reasons to this letter. Can we be told how much effort was made by councillors or officials to establish if it was possible for Weston to have the Tropicana refurbished as a swimming pool paid for out of council funds? I remember a meeting at the Winter Gardens where the council were asking what the ratepayer wanted doing to the Tropicana. One of the options was that the council should re-develop it themselves as a swimming pool and this option was the one preferred by the ratepayers. The new design for the refurbished London Fields Lido is to have the largest heated 50 metre outdoor swimming pool in London. It would cost Hackney Council £2.5 million paid for out of council funds. The pool could be covered with a bubble roof in the winter months. This roof can remain up all the time if necessary and it gives the council the option of using the pool all year round. Under the worst scenario the total cost to the council is still less than £3m - same amount as the recent overspend at Locking Castle! I know it is all too late now for any of this to be reconsidered, or is it?Maybe the council could contact Hackney Council and see if Weston could do the same at the Tropicana. I only propose this option, in case we end up with the same fiasco that Mace gave us after six years of messing us about.LAURENCE ORME - Shrubbery Avenue, Weston
