I WRITE with reference to an article entitled 'Smokers' which appeared on page 13 of last week's Mercury. As they say 'the devil is in the detail' and, following an in-depth conversation with the chairman of the Conservative Club, I was assured that it was in fact the council that closed down the outside smoking area due to a group of noisy people not, as stated in your article, the committee. This decision caused a great deal of upset amongst the members as many of them were smokers. The change in entrance times to the club has nothing to do with allowing smokers back in. It was requested so that members of home teams could return to the club after playing away matches. This application originated months before the smoking ban came in but was delayed due to detail and happened to come up at the same time as the smoking ban came in.KEITH WILSON - Via email
