NORTH Somerset Museum has a faithful and experienced band of volunteers and your report of the museum closure has come as a devastating blow.
These volunteers give their free time to categorise and record the many gifts the museum receives and without this skilled and sympathetically-handled work the museum would cease to function as an accredited establishment.
I am a volunteer and would completely refute the council's claim that the museum has damp and the storage is inadequate. Moisture is monitored by electronic sensors; pest control is actively pursued and the storage of all items is well set out in designated areas; location of any item can be found easily with the computer index system.
There is no need to close the museum on the grounds of unsuitability.
I would ask the council to address any technical concerns he has directly with the museum staff instead of making 'off the cuff' remarks.
