AGAINST public concern and opinion, they have given away our assets, Tropicana, Knightstone Island, our housing stock, our road system is in chaos, and in many instances near to collapse. We have seen overspends of public money (The Campus), they have slashed public spending leaving the sick, old, and infirm vulnerable. Not to mention the fortnightly rubbish collection, presently under discussion, something the Conservatives strongly pledged they had no intention of introducing in their pre-election manifesto. Every utterance they speak cannot be trusted. To rub salt in even deeper they now award themselves massive pay increases from public funds, this increase following similar increases in their allowances over the past few years. Some examples: 2002/03 increased by 36 per cent, 2003/04 increased by 21 per cent, 2004/05 increased by 16 per cent, 2005/06 increased by six per cent. All these figures taken from North Somerset Council accounts.Comments coming from the last meeting included: "This increase is to attract the right calibre of councillor, to make local democracy open to all."The present lot of councillors is not of the right calibre and we should dispose of them at the first opportunity to put a stop to this rot.D A STANLEY - Castle Hill, Banwell
