With reference to the last part of John Hitchcock's recent letter - whatever does he think goes on in retirement flats? The residents have mostly downsized from larger properties to keep their independence and make their lives easier. Some are people who have lived in the area for years and others have moved here to be nearer their families in their old age and I for one, pay more council tax than I did for a much larger property. As for 'entertainment', this has to be organised and paid for by the residents, unlike the youth of today. We grew up before the advent of TV and computers and learned how to amuse ourselves on a small amount of pocket money which was not just handed out but had to be earned. The more able-bodied of the residents serve on committees, work at charity shops and help out at the local functions in an effort to put something back into the local community which we enjoy being in.We are not just sitting about being entertained Mr Hitchcock.Name suppliedSt Peter's Lodge, Portishead
