IN 1981 Uphill village experienced severe flooding as a result of the combination of a strong gale and a very high tide. In a relatively short space of time following the flood the Environment Agency installed efficient sea walls and the sluice gates at the entrance of the boatyard have been updated to a high standard. In around 1990 we experienced another severe storm when the freezer from the beach cafe ended up on the golf course and Slimeridge Farm Caravan Park filled up like a giant pond with caravans bobbing around like toy ducks, as that area is the wrong side of the sea wall. The worst that happened on that day for the rest of the village was a tiny trickle of seawater that came over the hump at the entrance to the beach! It is because of the efficiency of the Uphill sea defences that we now have that I cannot understand why there has been so much publicity about this October's high tides, encouraging people to buy sandbags in Uphill village. We have lived in this house for 34 years, and if we had been in the least bit worried we would have moved out years ago. So for goodness sake encourage our council to seek grants or invest money where improved sea defences are really needed: in the Knightstone area of Weston.ROBERT ALLAMLinks Road, Uphill
