WITH reference to an article in your September 6 edition concerning the recruitment by North Somerset Council of an advisor for its councillors
WITH reference to an article in your September 6 edition concerning the recruitment by North Somerset Council of an advisor for its councillors, I was enraged by the attitude and mentality that lies behind the funding of this position. The job is advertised as paying a salary of up to £26,000 with generous holidays. The article goes on to say the salary will be funded by Government, which means no taxpayer's money will be used. This statement is misleading and is typical of the mentality held that the Government prints money as required and therefore the expenditure costs us nothing. It is also the attitude of many Government departments that condones any expense as long as some other department has to pay for it. At its worst, this attitude can result in careless and non-value for money spending.I'm not questioning the need or otherwise for an advisor. However, we must not lose sight of the fact that we all pay in the end, one way or another, for whatever Government departments decide to spend.MR J A LYNCH - The Hedges, St Georges
