Whilst we accept that out-of-town shopping locations may be more suitable for the retailing of bulky items, we strongly opposed the retail fashion element of Laura Ashley's proposal for this site also.
There are currently over50 empty units within the town centre, and to increase the provision of out-of-town fashion would further threaten the viability and vitality of the town centre.
We understand the planning application on behalf of Laura Ashley had to be made because there are specific conditions as to what the building can be used for, and these conditions are in place so that we can protect our town centre.
