I WAS amazed to read of the threatened closure of Weston Playhouse. Have our council taken leave of its senses? They spend a large sum of money on a grotesque erection at Big Lamp Corner and this vital part of our town is under threat. The Playhouse is one of the best-equipped treasures in the area - I speak as a member of many audiences and have conducted many orchestras from the pit. For years the authorities have been very hard on local societies who bring their own local audiences. When we first came to Weston, repertory companies came but plays don't fill seats, so they have gone by the board.Do the local councillors support the theatre, or do they only attend when they get a complimentary ticket?Would that I could win the lottery and buy the place myself, subsidise local talent, encourage local youth groups, and the talent that emerges from Weston College.Come on, councillors, get your act together and keep one of the few remaining assets this town has.GRETA PLANK - Bridge Road, Bleadon
