THERE are many people in Weston who consider that the town council is of no importance and the headline in last week's Mercury will add a lot more to the list.

How insensitive for a North Somerset Council employee to take a retirement package at the age of 51 and then move over to the town council as its new town clerk.

This means we, as council tax payers in Weston, have contributed to his salary at North Somerset, his pension and now his new salary at Grove Park. No doubt he will now qualify for a new pension when his tenure at the town council is over, which will come from the same pot.

Had the town council not existed he could just have changed jobs in the Town Hall and be put in charge of Weston's affairs and there would have been no pension payout - thus saving the 190,000.

When people are losing their jobs, homes and savings you can understand the anger that has been generated and those involved should be ashamed. It may be all legal and above board, but it still stinks.
