I WAS aghast to read in the Mercury that the High Street in Worle is to be closed in September as a trial for a future permanent shutdown. This, even after local traders have warned North Somerset Council officers that the High Street will die if it's closed to traffic. Cllr Crockford-Hawley says local traders who have been here for years seem to be under some misapprehension as to the actual purpose of the closure. Really I think not. These people are the backbone of our community and deserve every encouragement to keep Worle High Street alive and ticking for all of us. I see he plans to meet traders and ward councillors to discuss the closure. Why? What is it about the word NO that Cllr Crockford-Hawley does not understand? This meeting being chaired by this councillor, will not be open to the tax-paying public.Well, there's a surprise. It is this form of dictatorship that has finally brought me to the decision to stand as an independent candidate in the May elections and I hope that many other local people will join me and bring about an end to the political chicanery and financial ruin of our town.ADAM NASHNewland Road, Weston
