NOT to be outdone by our MPs, our local councillors want some of the action and want to take more money from our wallets and put it in theirs. Councillor Nigel Ashton wants to increase his allowance from £20,979 to £32,479. Councillor Elfan Ap Rees could increase his from £17,832 to £25,080 and all other executive members could increase by 43.7 per cent. Remaining councillors could receive an increase of 24.1 per cent. Who will vote on these monstrous increases? The councillors, so we know the outcome. What is even more annoying is the way this council is cutting allowances to many of our voluntary groups. For example, Preanes Green Resource Centre has had its grant taken away this year. The amount involved is less than Cllr Ap Rees' proposed allowance increase, but it could lead to the closure of this much used facility. North Worle Local Action Team has been turned down for its grant, which will hit the hard-working voluntary group hard. Since the election last May, the council has been dominated by Tories who can do what they like, and this is what you get. They throw our trust back in our faces. The only funny side of this is that they vote on these pay increases on April 1, but I don't know who are the bigger fools, the councillors or Weston voters who put them there. Clearly they hope that by voting themselves a massive increase in this, their first year, we will all forget it by the next election.PETER HARDAWAY - Via email
