NICE of Rev Eales to mention God and I in the same letter and equally nice to be stopped in the street by so many people who also believed that the church service on the Grand Pier was trashy. That service said more about the people involved than about anything to do with religion.I was brought up learning the teachings of Jesus which were based around kindness, compassion, and self reliance rather than self obsession. What ruined my faith was the perpetual slaughter of innocent people in God's name and the way that so many church figures believe they speak for God in whatever they say or do. Thus we have bigoted bishops in Africa, lunatic fascists in America, and out-of-touch vicars here who forget that Jesus was not happy among gamblers and those who strip money from the poor. Jesus, I suspect, would not condone digging up dead people so one could build an extension!I have no time for God or for those who turn him into the great ventriloquist in the sky so as to gain publicity for themselves. True Christians do not always have to pander to the lowest common denominator.BRIAN AUSTIN - Alma Street, Weston
