CONGRATULATIONS to Mike Bell in his endeavour to stop Tesco taking over in Weston. I hope he is successful, as rumour has it Tesco is also seeking planning permission to open a store in Milton Road next to Ashcombe Park. This is totally unwarranted as between Baytree Road and Ashcombe Road there are four convenience stores and one off-licence. Should Tesco be successful in gaining planning permission, it could be disastrous for the family-run store a few yards away, where I have worked for 20 years. It could cause my employer to close down, losing his livelihood and his dedicated staff losing their jobs.Small convenience stores lost a certain amount of trade when the supermarkets extended their opening hours and opening on Sundays. They are, it seems, not satisfied with a large bite of the cherry. They want it all at the expense of small businesses.JULIE HOOD - Via email
