AS I understand it in the near future we are to have local elections in which we can decide who we wish to represent our opinions and needs as we are too busy ourselves carrying out our worker ant existence to have the time.As an afficionado of the bobble hat (of which I have several) and an avid anorak wearer in all weathers I look forward to the ousting of officials who denigrate my habitual attire. However the balance sheet so far with our elected and paid for local officials is a catalogue of magnificent ineptitude, the list is superb, overspends of millions of euros (sorry pounds) on school building projects, the Silica Carrot still somehow waiting for divine intervention and hopefully some more cash from you and me to finish off the edifice The rapid demolition of the boating pond because health and safety said it was a danger (actually the digger driver cleaning it out wrecked it so it was cheaper to destroy it than repair it) hence its quick demise. My all time favourite is the illuminated tower by the motorway to register Weston-super-Mare with the passing holidaymaker as the place to visit, over £100,000 wasted. Now we have a scheme to build a wall along the seafront so you cannot see the sea unless you wear stilts, just what visitors to Weston want.Global warming is the new scare and a lovely cash cow for politicians, the basis for the scare is spurious to say the least. The heaviest recorded rainfall in the UK was reported in 1917 at Bruton in Somerset as 9.56 inches in 24 hours, a long time before this scare was even thought of.Now a proposal to switch off street lights to save money, one imagines this will include those annoying things suspended between poles on the seafront. One good way of saving £113,000 per year (the cost of 13 cuts to the grass at Hutton Moor Sports Complex) would be to put it out to competitive tender. Now we come onto the nettle, the Tropicana which was called the pool because actually that's what it was, derelict now for seven years because no money was available to keep it up to scratch. The money was available by the bucket load but was being diverted elsewhere. Needless to say our elected officials chose to deny this and got away with it, because the agenda for them is aggrandisement and self advancement at any cost, as we the ratepayers are too stupid and indifferent to oppose them. Hence the demise of Weston as a seaside resort. The time has come to sweep away the dead leaves and compost them in our Indian green recycling bags and get people on the council, and in the cash sponge we call the Town Hall, who will actually look out for the interests of the local indigenous hard working worker ants. The strategic planning and transport flag waved and readily reported all over the place is an absolute joke, the instigators of the title and their accolades should be publicly derided and their photographs and phone numbers placed on hoardings on the link road so the worker ants can give them a ring to express their displeasure in having to sit in a mile long queue every morning because their elected representatives quite frankly don't give a damn. My message is vote, please cast your vote for anybody in 2007 other than the shower we have at the moment, even if they do a runner with all our cash we can be no worse off than we are now.A G F HILLIERHolland Street, Weston
