Ref your article March 8 about Nore Road, Portishead, and the need for improvements.Nore Road was widened from the terminus to Glenwood pre World War Two and it was proposed to continue the improvement, through the section of road in question, after the war when plans were drawn up by the Portishead Urban District Council. This scheme almost came to fruition but was cancelled abruptly in approximately 1965 to save money. As a port worker I cycled to and from Redcliffe Bay to the Portishead Docks for 30 years until retirement and was always nervous of this section of road.Several accidents, including fatalities, having occurred during that time.Common sense dictates what needs to be done. The land on the south side of the road, opposite Nore Park, bordering the road, needs to be cleared of trees.A sidewalk needs to be constructed on either side and the 'hump' at Brackenwood entrance lowered. The road level needs to be raised by Glenwood footpath to give improved visibility at various junctions which should have stop signs.Street lighting should be improved by continuing the lamp standards from Fedden Village through to Ashdown Road, instead of being hung off electricity poles as at present.Road markings and speed restrictions signs could also be employed.H T Hamer - Hillside Road, Redcliffe Bay, Portishead
