How much longer do the people of Portishead have to be insulted by the bloody-minded and short-sighted attitudes of a town council that cares so very little for anything that reminds them of old Portishead and a district council who are so out of touch with reality they could be prime candidates for the first UNreality TV show. As the main ambition of most local councillors these days is to be a celebrity rather than a representative of local opinion maybe it would be a good way to of-fload them.If Portishead pool, Somerset Hall and the Avon Hall are financial millstones around our poor necks, why the hell are the town council prepared to throw £70,000 towards a new hall in the village quarter? They can't manage the ones they've already got!Let's face it, the two councils together have failed the people of Portishead by not maintaining these facilities long term, by not operating those facilities in a commercially viable way and by showing such indifference to anything that reminds them of Old Portishead. I wouldn't be surprised if they would be happier to demolish the whole town, grass it over and make it an extension to the Lake Grounds.Council decisions and indecisions have created a monster that is out of control. Portishead now consists of two very separate towns and however many timeline inspired silver balls they use to try to convince people that we are all one town, reality is a million miles away. It gets further away when, on one hand, the district council wants to close our current community halls whilst on the other hand the power hungry amateur politicians on the town council want to take our money to throw in the direction of the new developments on a community hall?If the town council wants to spend £70,000 of our money on a scheme whose costs will no doubt escalate as the developers realise that we have no choice than to accept large hikes in our council tax to cover the council's short-sighted blunders, might I make a few suggestions.Get the pavements sorted in the High Street, get the paths around the Lake Grounds made safe, and spend some money on stopping the swimming pool, Avon Hall, Somerset Hall, etc., rotting away. maybe try spending some of the cash you always manage to find to spruce up the Folk Hall so often, on projects that benefit all of us not just yourselves. In short, do what you are meant to be doing and get your heads out of the sand for the entire tenure of your time on the council, don't just come to life because there's an election looming and then pretend to care.S Meredith - Station Road, Portishead
