I KNOW there is an election on the horizon that is getting some of our more ambitious councillors a bit over-excited but I thought it totally out of order when Cllr Roe and Cllr Bell started taking pot-shots at the proposed sea wall last week. The required height of that wall is that which will make the residents of Weston safe for the next several decades in the face of rising sea levels and increasing tidal surges in storm weather. It comes with a massive grant from Government, a grant that would not be available for the other schemes because the other schemes do not provide a standard of safety. There are some 10 hotels whose ground floor views could be affected, but as several of those have main bars on those floors, and as any self-respecting tourist will be on the other side of the wall enjoying the air, the complaint dreamed up by the above councillors is facetious at best. Scientists are saying that by the year 2100 the tide could be three feet higher than on that night and displace a very large number of central Weston residents. What price your views then? Councillors will please stop playing games over such an important matter, especially if they are not as well informed as they think they are.BRIAN AUSTINAlma Street, Weston
