CLLR KELLAWAY-MARRIOTT showed a similar confusion last week to John Carter the week before, in mistakenly thinking that the Environmental Services panel meeting on July 31 was to discuss North Somerset's present waste and recycling collections. The meeting was to discuss joint working with other councils on the disposal of the rubbish which at present goes to landfill. It is a pity the panel member who invited members of the public did not tell them the meeting's purpose or the arrangements for public speaking, so that Cllr Kellaway-Marriott would not have been disappointed. So far as complaints about the council's present refuse and recycling collections are concerned, I always hope that the council can do better. But problems have to be seen in context. In one fortnight this July there were 607 complaints out of a total of 333,000 house-collections (176,000 refuse, 88,000 recycling and 69,000 green waste). This is a success rate of over 99.75 per cent. I am confident that complaints will go down, but it would be a rash person to guarantee a 100 per cent success rate.DEBORAH YAMANAKA - North Somerset Council
