NORTH Somerset Council is committed to providing the best possible library service within the difficult financial climate which everyone recognises.

As has already been previously stated in a letter to the Weston Mercury, written by the chief executive of North Somerset Council, the lease on the building in Banwell expires in June 2010 and alternative arrangements will have to be made.

Secondly, I personally spoke to one of the mothers, with a member of the parish council also present, following the last council's executive meeting, when the issues of the libraries was discussed.

My fellow councillor and I (Councillor Lake was away on holiday) offered our unconditional support in trying to move forward with a solution and from that discussion it was agreed that the parish council, ward councillors and the youth council would meet at a mutually convenient time, this has still to be arranged.

At no time did I say that I would be at the next parish council meeting, because I knew that none of us would have been able to attend, owing to a previous commitment and the parish council was aware of this.

I also knew that it would not have been appropriate to conduct this meeting at a full parish council meeting, in fact I believe that I suggested that maybe a working party should be set up to be organised by the parish council involving all interested parties and my understanding is that the parish council is prepared to arrange this.

My fellow councillors and I look forward to meeting with the youth and parish councillors, in order that together, we can work towards provision of viable alternatives to the present service.
