HAVING read the introduction to the February edition of North Somerset Life would Councillor Ap Rees care to inform me what will be happening to the potholes which he has finished endlessly chasing around.

How many miles of North Somerset roads will be resurfaced this year and what is happening to the potholes in the miles that will not be resurfaced?

Is he prepared to pay for all the broken suspensions to the cars?

Travelling from Littlefields Avenue, Banwell, to Winscombe via Nippors Way, the number of potholes are numerous.

Having lived in Nippors Way for more than 30 years I can say the road has never been maintained at all and is now akin to a cart track. Could we please have a sensible answer?

I SEE Ian Pitch is up to his usual nonsense in last week’s Mercury

The facts Ian are that Trop (WSM) Ltd was set up originally to stop the demolition of the Tropicana and move forward to a replacement, the enabling team is a natural progression to that end.

The RGF grant application is only one avenue of funding being looked at, as has been stated before.

With regard the Tropicana opening in 2015, anybody following events knows that North Somerset Council has been dragging its feet, delaying the Trop (WSM) Ltd moving forward in earnest. Any reasonable person can see the delay that this is causing.

You need to get over your jealousy and stop bitching about Derek Mead, a local man who has spent more than £50,000 of his own money in trying to save the Tropicana for the good of Weston.

WHEN I worked on the river we used to say about ‘the fresh’’, meaning the high amounts of fresh water coming down the river from the Welsh hills. I remember that one time it was 12 foot after a particular wet rainfall. This soon dissipated by the tide running particularly fast.

Imagine, if there was a barrage slowing down the ebb tide, this ‘fresh’ would back up. Just as in the current situation on the Levels we would be prime candidates for severe flooding north of the barrage,

I suggest that talk of it should now be put to bed forever and don’t meddle with nature.

THE letters page of the Mercury of February 6 carried a letter from a civic society committee member using what was supposed to refer to Grove Park Bandstand to attack the treasurer of his own society.

This last Mercury of February 13 carries a letter from the treasurer of the U3A in which he comments on civic society business and thereby also attacks the same treasurer.

This is seriously out of order in both cases.

The arguments and decisions of society committees should be confidential until officially passed on through society minutes.

The interactions of civic society committee members are no business of the U3A, despite the fact that some people sit on both, and I have to wonder if the ribs of the U3A treasurer are still showing the bruises from the nudging.

This perpetual in-fighting reflects a level of self interest that should have been left in primary school. It is pathetic to throw a sulk every time you fail to get your own way, and this town (and the residents) would be better served by people who could behave like adults.

WE LEARNT from the Mercury that North Somerset Council has employed consultants at a cost to council tax payers of £100,000 to investigate how the council could save money.

Surprise, surprise, one of their ‘easy delivery’ suggestions is for raising money. It is for, guess what? It is to extend parking charges on the on-street (or car owner fleecing) spaces.

How pleased Councillor Elfan Ap Rees must be to get sanction for his continuing attack on Weston residents.

I suggest a very cheap way to save money would have been not to employ expensive consultants and get the councillor to resign. That would have saved £100,000 plus the cost of cllr Ap Rees. That’s what I call real saving.

JOHN Crockford-Hawley writes that Lord Archer was born in Weston, whilst correspondent Margaret Wood says he was born in London.

As I understand it he was born in Mark and he has the title, Lord Jeffrey

Archer of Weston-super-Mare and Mark in the county of Somerset.

I remember his mother once telling me that he was born in Mark and I believe she was there at the time.

My thanks to Traditional Pasty Company, Brooking Ruse & Company for sponsoring the after lunch for all the walkers, thanks also to Protect Safety Signs, Cheddar Water, The Grand Pier and Weston General Hospital staff and BHF (British Heart Foundation) volunteers for their support.

My thanks to everyone who supported and helped in any way and we are planning a bigger and better event on September 28 with the event this year also raising money for the RNLI. I hope you will join us.

ON BEHALF of The Lions Club of Weston, I would like to thank the management and staff of Waitrose and all those who gave so generously to the relief fund.

We collected £1,059 on the day, which we intend to make up to £1,500 from our own charity funds. This money will be added to the £18,000 the Lions have already donated to help the families whose lives have been affected.

The flood waters are still rising and our assistance will predominately kick in when the waters recede. The funds will be used for cleaning up and emergency repairs, clothing, drying and heating equipment, including additional heating costs, kitchen equipment, child care equipment, sterilising and special medical equipment, beds and bedding and temporary accommodation costs.

The priority households that we will be helping are those with adults over 70, children under five and people with physical or learning difficulties.

As and when the need arises we intend to hold additional fundraising activities to meet any specific requirements from the affected families.

Thank you again for your support.

I HOPE the person who took the life of my cat, Nidda, can sleep with a clear conscience.

Ewart Road is used as a rat run but is there any need to drive down it as if it were part of a race track? I appreciate cats do not obey the Green Cross Code but a sensible speed can avoid heartbreak.

Please search your conscience, were you driving down Ewart Road between 7.30am and 9am on Monday, February 17? Was it you?

CONGRATULATIONS to North Somerset snowboarder Jenny Jones, who began her career in Churchill, on her well-deserved bronze medal in the snowboard event in Sochi at the Winter Olympics after an impeccable second run which scored her 87.25 points.

Jenny won her bronze medal and where she trained at the Mendip Snowsport Centre in Churchill some 16 years ago, the centre has enjoyed an explosion in popularity as other would-be Olympians book up to take their first into the sport.

I WANTED to say well done to all at Weston in Bloom, the floral displays look nice, especially at Weston Railway Station and the area where Sparky the Donkey is.
