THE so-called Conservative administration at North Somerset Council seems determined to make a mockery of local traditions by pressing ahead with its plans for a mayor. North Somerset is an arbitrary administrative area with no inherent identity for a mayor to represent. And 'borough' status? In my dictionary, a borough is a town, not a huge slice of countryside. The official reasons for the move are superficial and unconvincing. Is the real motive to get a mayor and then make the post directly elected? Replacing local councillors and public debate with a local dictator and closed decision-making, as happens in London? I think so.DIANA REES - Atlantic Road South, Weston
