I have been a user, and a great admirer of the Portishead amenity site and can confirm that it is much missed.North Somerset Council, or certainly the part of it dealing with waste management, must have been aware of the volume going through the Portishead facility and this the strain its closure would put upon the remaining sites, to say nothing of the inconvenience caused to residents. How they can have allowed its re-opening to be treated in such an offhand way, beggars belief. It says much for Portishead residents that it is only now, when the lack of urgency is acknowledged, that fly tipping is starting to appear. The excuses given that 'the birds took longer to move on than anticipated' and 'extensive netting needs to be put across the rockface' are really rather pitiful.Contractors should have been approached in April so that work could have commenced as soon as the birds left.I rather think that if something of this sort had happened in the private sector, someone would be looking for a job.Gordon Coleclough - Via e-mail
