ALL this reporting in the local press about the new sea defences for Weston, which now appears to be of great concern to our councillors seems to me an attempt to cover up the big mistake which was made by Cllr Crockford-Hawley and the team of council officials when at the beginning of this year North Somerset submitted an application for funding of £7 million to Defra, only to be turned down because they had not obtained planning permission which was a condition of receiving a grant. Are we to believe the council's natural environment co-ordinator Rachel Lewis: 'Things are moving very fast. We're looking to put in a planning application for grant funding by the end of September'. She then admits they expect to be turned down but goes on to state that if all goes well they could start work next summer. Cllr Crockford-Hawley even said "if for some reason the finances are not forthcoming we will have plans in place for when they are", this from the man who missed out the first time round. I just don't trust the people who are supposed to have Weston's best interests at heart but then again, does anyone?LAURENCE F ORMEShrubbery Avenue, Weston
