I would like to defend Chief Superintendent Hayler in her reply to Cllr Clive Webb's comments regarding why the Community Support Officers spend time in schools talking about the perils of smoking, but am afraid I cannot. Neither I suspect would the traders in Meadow Street, who are fed up with the police abdicating responsibility for illegal parking 'because they are too busy', the householders in Worle and elsewhere who are fed up with the lack of response when they ring to complain about louts on minibikes or teenagers fuelled with alcohol, and all those other residents in the district who experience other examples of antisocial behaviour and no police presence on a daily basis. There are plenty of people to lecture on the dangers of smoking, North Somerset's Anti-Smoking officer for one and the Primary Care Trust, who should be doing more to combat health issues at source instead of expecting the police to step in.Their prime task surely is fighting crime and disorder. Anything else should only be tackled when we have enough police and PCSO's on the beat that we don't know what to do with them all.I can't see that happening anytime soon! ELFAN AP REES - Locking
