The proposal to build a dual carriageway link (North Somerset Times on July 5) between Long Ashton and Clevedon would destroy a large swathe of North Somerset, as we know it.The environmental effect would be disastrous with the destruction of habitat and breeding grounds whilst its unwelcome visual impact on what is left of our already rapidly diminishing quiet and green space is immeasurable. Further, how often does an urban highway remain just that? With infrastructure then in place North Somerset would be a prime target for any permutation of development involving industrial and/or extensive housing units along the link's course ironically creating still more traffic headaches than it will solve. The ultimate outcome being an area scarcely distinguishable from Greater Bristol - as Yate has become to the north of the city.To escape the flood plain. the road will at least in part need to be elevated making it even more conspicuous. Those indifferent to the environmental argument might care to reflect on the likely reduced property values which it will leave in its wake. The link is a project that must not be allowed to proceed.Chris Stone - Clevedon
