FOR the life of me I fail to understand why the police had to close a short section of the very busy A370 leading south out of Weston between the Grange Road roundabout and Uphill Road South on Wednesday 21.

I fully understand that a mental health patient who had climbed up an electricity pylon had to be rescued, but this pylon is in the middle of a field at least 35-40 metres from the A370 with no vehicular access to the field from this road or the pylon.

Or was it some busybody from the oft misguided Health and Safety Executive finding an excuse to exert some authority? By all means close Grange Road which runs in front of the hospital with gated access to the field for the emergency services and possibly hospital staff.

Having driven into Weston before this incident, without wishing to appear unconcerned, on my return it took well over half and hour thanks to closures and diversions causing almost total gridlock, to travel the three miles to reach my home on the lower slopes of Bleadon Hill.

Police over-reaction perhaps?
