I HAVE thought for some time that North Somerset councillors were to say the least 'lacking', but now I am sure they have all gone mad. Who on earth thought it would be a great idea to waste a £1million grant by sticking two tacky six metre high ranch-style arches on the promenade? This nonsense following the decision to build a six-storey hotel on the beach confirms the lunatics have taken over the asylum.A recent national survey found that respondents voted Sidmouth as their favourite seaside town. What people love about Sidmouth is that it is unspoilt. The beach, the sea, and the promenade, are always busy and the adjoining town and shops are thriving. Why do councillors in Weston constantly want to bring this town down? Weston already has even more to offer than Sidmouth. The magnificent bay, splendid sandy beach and lengthy promenade are assets that seem too simple for our councillors to recognise. They can't ruin them fast enough with their over zealous plans for development. None of this is progress. Who said it was fine to build these nasty meritless arches? Who took this decision? This is not merely a matter of bad taste, this is a complete waste of money. The thinking behind this is both ridiculous and abhorrent. Who came to the conclusion that what Weston was lacking was two 18ft arches? Who?M D FOSTER - Ashcombe Road, Weston
