I READ with unease the story published in the Mercury on the patient care given to a lady on Berrow Ward, Weston Hospital. Her family must be devastated at her loss, and my sympathy goes out to them.I cannot comment on what went on in the ward at that time but it probably didn't occur in the context in which it was reported. When you see how hard the nurses work, the sheer volume of patients coming through the hospital, etc., it is only to be expected that we will encounter more infections in the future, and a few mistakes will be made.I have been a patient in Weston Hospital since September, and on each of the wards to which I have been admitted, including Berrow Ward, I have been treated extremely well.If we want to keep our hospital staff, we must support them and this piece of journalism was hardly the best PR exercise.MARGARET DINGLEY - Cheddar Ward, Weston General Hospital* Editor's note: We take your point totally about how hard the nurses work and the Weston Mercury would not presume to criticise them.
