It does seem more than strange that a part-timer can earn 60,000 per year for three days a week when the original town clerk was on about 55,000 full-time.

I ask the question is it really necessary to have a town council at all. Most of its duties could be performed quite adequately by North Somerset Council and we could revert to the charter trustees to look after the ceremonial and mayoral duties of the town - at a much reduced cost to the taxpayers.

Is it commonly known that there are 31 town councillors in addition to the 23 Weston councillors on North Somerset - yes that's right, a total of 54. Many of the councillors wear two hats being on both councils but there are 54 seats up for grabs at election time.

If you want a planning permission granted it first goes to the town council, which, as it has no real powers passes the request on to North Somerset with a recommendation - what a complete waste of time.

I appreciate that any number of letters or comments will have absolutely no effect because we all just sit back and let the world revolve. Somebody should remind both councils that there is a credit crunch at present so why not combine the two to save money? I guess hell will freeze over first.
