I VIEW with some cynicism the fact that the Conservative run council is taking the first steps towards North Somerset Council attaining borough status. It would appear that the only benefit of this status would be the imposition of two mayors rather than the one that we presently have in Weston.I'm sure that given the choice, the people of the county would vote a resounding 'NO!' to such an idea. The only people to benefit would be the councillors themselves who would not only line their pockets with yet more expenses but would also 'strut their stuff' in costly anarchic robes and chains at the expense of the council tax payer.I note that to be awarded borough status would cost about £1,200 which to a fair-minded person would appear not too much to ask. However it is the hidden costs that should concern the people of North Somerset as the mayor and/or his deputy lay on extravagant events for visiting dignitaries; tour the county and elsewhere in limousines paid for by the taxpayer and the sundry other items of cost pertaining to the post of mayor! The councillors should be turning their attentions to the latest news that Weston's Central Ward has yet again be placed on the 'most deprived' list instead of concentrating their efforts on the frippery and extravagant post of mayor!TONY PROBERT - South Lawn, Locking
