I WAS pleased to see my letter regarding the railings at the top of Birkett Road in last week's Mercury. However, I am disappointed that the person doing the printing chose to alter what I actually wrote. It should have read "that the only work done was to remove the old railings and re-surface the pavement, leaving the new railings in a pile nearby".There was no mention of the pavement, which was precisely my point. Why have the new railings been left there all this time? Surely their replacement should have taken priority over the pavement when it has left a dangerous gap unprotected.Having read the article in answer to the matter, I find it hard to believe that the railings have had to go back to the factory - they certainly have not been moved from the pavement since the so called 'work' ceased! We have a public house and restaurant close by and I pass the site on a daily basis. Those railings were left damaged for years allowing plenty of time to measure up for new ones. Today, I see that the ends of the wire screen have been turned inwards, thus forcing people to walk in the road to get by. This is totally unacceptable and a great danger.MRS SALLY PAGE - Trawden Close, WestonEditor's Note: Please accept our sincere apologies for the words omitted in your previous letter.
