ON JUNE 6 we commemorate the D-Day landings in Normandy, France, the biggest armada in history.

Will the flags be flying in this town to remember those who gave their lives for freedom - the freedom we enjoy today, and which we take so much for granted? Without the sacrifice of thousands of young men who fought and died for us, we would not be here now. All those lost would have had one thing on their mind that day, and that was to get the fight over, and return to their loved ones waiting for their return. Thousands did not.

To go to the battlefield cemeteries in Europe: the peace felt is like nothing else, and the inscriptions on the headstones make you weep.

The Europeans are very grateful to those who gave their lives to liberate them. They fly flags of every nation everywhere you go and the graves are treated with the utmost respect. For them it is is an honour to show their appreciation. And it is a wonderful tribute each year, by these people who do not forget, or let their children forget, the bravery of those young heroes.

Here, sadly, only on Remembrance Day do people here really take part in remembering them. But I hope this year will be different, maybe.
