WITH the sad loss of the main pier, now must be the time to revamp quickly the seafront and town centre. We have the land train, but why not link everything with trams, such as happens in Christchurch in New Zealand.Starting at a new Birnbeck Pier it could travel along the front, up one side of the pier and back down the other, along and around the Tropicana leisure centre, back along the Beach Lawns, through Dolphin Square down the High Street to The Playhouse end and back to Birnbeck, passing through leisure centres and shopping areas and offering a one-day, two-day or weekly pass.If this is too much, then how about the land train using this route, with shares in the fares taken going to the owners of the attractions. Come on Weston, let's think big and go for it, quickly. It has occurred to me that, thankfully, the Grand Pier was closed when the fire broke out. However, had it been full of people, would they have been able to escape safely?Perhaps chutes such as used in aircraft, housed in life raft type covers may be the answer, as it's quite a drop at low tide and even at high tide.Secondly, perhaps extra mains pipes under the pier structure may have provided a greater source of water quickly. These are just ideas for thoughts in reconstruction I hope.DAVID THOMPSON - Address supplied
