WHILE I accept that roadworks are a necessity of life, and cannot be avoided, it is important that local residents are kept informed. The road works on Clapton Lane this month have been an absolute fiasco. The days and times when the lane would be open seems to have changed on a daily basis, with little thought to commuters, leading to long tailbacks on all routes in and out of Portishead at peak times. It is not clear what work is being carried out other than the repair to the damaged bridge and the road surface. Most commuters plan their time, and route of travel carefully, and this confusion just leads to additional stress and frustration. I would like to think that major roadworks are planned to keep disruption to a minimum, but in this instance I'm not so sure. The current travel experience is the best possible publicity for the re-opening of the railway line.COLIN HOWELLS - Hillcrest Road, Portishead
