REGARDING the comments of Cllr Elfan Ap Rees in last week's Mercury where he insists that people who get stuck in the mud should fend for themselves 'because nobody has ever died', it is certainly not true that there has not been a death. About 20 years ago a man tried to walk his children from Uphill to Brean Down across the mud. This resulted in a helicopter rescue and his small daughter was airlifted to Weston Hospital. Sadly his little girl died.A serious and urgent message has to be put across to the foolhardy who attempt to venture onto the deadly mudflats or float out to sea on inflatable sun beds and small inflatable boats with an off-shore breeze to whisk them out to sea before they know it. Such activities are incredibly stupid, dangerous and potentially lethal. How many warning signs in how many languages will have to be erected before common sense prevails.ROBERT ALLAM - Links Road, Uphill
