JUST who is it that decides why or if compensation payments should be paid to council employees?North Somerset Council is going to make payments to 36 senior council staff costing £36,000 because the council is no longer going to provide and pay for private health cover. Is it not true that the officials concerned are already being paid serious sums of money each week by North Somerset?Plus, of course, their pension contributions are again paid out of council funds. Don't these people already earn enough to be able to pay for their own health care?It is proposed that the council pays them a one-off payment of £1,000 to help them overcome the disappointment of not having their health looked after by the council or, should I add, the ratepayers. It appears that Cllr Tony Lake has already called for some of these compensation payments to be dropped. I say why not all of them be dropped, they are all highly paid people. We all pay council tax, at least if we can save anything at all to keep it down we should do it rather than look after the fat cat officials who are lucky enough to work for the North Somerset Council.LAURENCE F ORME - Shrubbery Avenue, Weston
