THE news that local councillors in North Somerset have just awarded themselves massive and disproportionate pay rises, in the teeth of vociferous local outrage and indignation, should surprise no-one. But I wonder if local people quite realise that the appropriate response to this nauseating display of local authority corporate greed is entirely in their own hands, and is really very simple. We all need to focus very strongly on making the next round of local government elections a single issue campaign. I therefore urge, in the strongest possible terms, every resident of North Somerset district who is eligible to vote, to turn out and to make it their prime object systematically to unseat every single councillor who voted for the pay increase. Let's bring back power where it really belongs - to the community, and hit these people where it will, apparently, hurt them most - in their bank balances. As the saying goes: don't get mad - get even.DR NICK CORCOS - Highbury Road, Weston
