I am surprised and apprehensive about your report for a call for a 20mph speed limit near the school on Down Road.I think that it would do nothing for the safety of the schoolchildren, but would cause a lot of inconvenience for road users.I live on Down Road and drive past the school most days and just do not see the behaviour which is supposed to be endangering the children. The only occasions when there are children about near the school are at the arriving and letting out times five days a week in term time, say about an hour in total on each of those days. For the remaining 97 per cent of the time the children are either safe inside the school or well away from the area, so a reduced speed limit would do nothing for them then.During the time when the children are about, the much maligned parents who transport their kids to school by car, so block the road in the area that they effectively apply a 10mph limit or less at critical periods. And having the new crossing handy means that there is no need to step out on the roadway between parked cars to cross the road. Getting the cars to stop further away would remove this protection and also might tempt people to cross the road from between parked cars rather than wait until they have walked to the crossing, so that might not be a good idea either. While I would support any effective action that improves children's safety, I think that there are already too many restrictions which just delay traffic without having any corresponding benefit.K R Brown - Down Road, Portishead
