FOLLOWING the loss of the Grand Pier, I walked along the seafront from the Royal Sands end. The view over the bay now means we have the Tropicana, a very derelict building which is getting worse, the pier reduced to a burnt-out shell and the old pier gradually falling to pieces. In all, Weston is fast becoming a run-down resort. The pier owners have confirmed they intend to re-build the pier as soon as possible, but we all know that with the inevitable red tape this could take years. Birnbeck Pier is in some sort of re-building programme but when that will take place nobody seems to be quite sure and then the Tropicana saga goes on and on.It is time our council took steps to bring Weston into the 21st century, and they could start with dropping the Henry Boot plans for the Tropicana. They seem to be slipping away on their own. Do what the residents of Weston want: re-build the Tropicana and roof it so that we could again have a pool and start to become what Weston was: a holiday resort.
